The Department of African Studies is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Delhi. It was established in December 1954 at the personal initiative of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. He inaugurated it formally on August 6, 1955 with a mandate to promoting awareness about Africa.The Department undertakes multi-disciplinary teaching and research leading to M.Phil. and Ph.D. Degrees of the University of Delhi along with Certificate and Diploma in Swahili Language.The Department provides a forum for fostering mutual understanding, friendship and cooperation between peoples of India and Africa. Thus, the mandate of the Department extends beyond its primary function of acquisition and dissemination of knowledge to promotion of India-Africa relations. The Department has provsion to send Ph.D research scholar for field visit to collect primary sources to strengthen his research work every year.
Center for African Studies
The Department in collaboration with the University Grants Commission (U.G.C.) is running the Center for African Studies. This Area Studies Centre contributes to the research and teaching of African development through special lectures, seminars and symposia. This Center has been conducting many special Lectures and Seminars which have been attended by various Indian and African Diplomats, scholars from African region and experts from India. The Center has provision to sponsor faculty and a research scholar for Field Study so as to acquire first hand knowledge and understanding of Africa.
